Understanding The Rich History of the Piqua Shawnee Tribe

The Piqua Shawnee Tribe has an incredibly rich history. For centuries, this tribe has been part of our country’s culture. This group is one of just nine tribes that is actually recognized by Alabama’s state legislature.

There is evidence that the Shawnee people have lived in Alabama for more than three hundred years. Initially, however, the tribe lived in what is now Ohio. The Piqua derive their name from a story about a wicked ghost. The soul of a wicked man was reincarnated after the man’s death. Instead of being able to die, the spirit was asked to lead the tribe. The spirit would appear in smoke when a member of the tribe started a fire. The phrase Piqua can be translated to mean “from the ashes, the spirit arises.” The upshot here is that if history is important to you, it only makes sense to read about the Piqua Shawnee Tribe.

Over the centuries, the Piqua Shawnee Tribe have faced many hardships. Many times, the tribe has been forced to relocate. This first happened in the seventeenth century. Due to conflict in the Indiana region, the tribe was forced to move to a new location. The vast majority of the people in the tribe decided to settle in Alabama. The Piqua Shawnee Tribe lived among Creek tribes during these decades.

When the war ended, the people of the Piqua Shawnee Tribe were faced with a difficult situation. Some of the tribes people decided to return to the midwest, but others opted to remain in the south. War returned to the region a few years later. About two hundred years ago, war broke out between the French, English, and Americans. When this occurred, the region actually became incredibly unstable. Unfortunately, war was not the only threat that the Piqua Shawnee faced. During this time, the tribe came into contact with the smallpox virus. A number of infected blankets were taken from Fort Pitt during Pontiac’s Rebellion. There were several tribes that had already been exposed to smallpox. Since the Shawnee had never been exposed, though, the disease was particularly pernicious. After some time passed, the Choctaw and Chickasaw tribes were exposed to the virus.
